Kelly Khumalo Dropped From Music Festival
Afro-pop singer, Kelly Khumalo, has been officially dropped from the line-up of the “Tribute to Women” concert due to backlash for her involvement in the ongoing Senzo Meyiwa murder trial.
Organisers of the concert – which is scheduled to take place at the Botanical Gardens in Johannesburg, Gauteng on Saturday, 12 August – issued a statement to the public via Instagram on Monday, 31 July, addressing the matter.
“We have noted, with concern, various comments on social media platforms and calls from many patrons of our festival,” the organisers said before adding that while they respect the legal process and believe Khumalo is innocent until proven otherwise, she has been removed from the line-up.
“Management has taken the decision to relieve Ms Khumalo of her obligations to perform at our festival this year to afford her and her team the time they require to deal with the issues emanating from the current court proceedings.”
Recent testimony in Meyiwa’s murder trial claimed that a cellphone registered under Khumalo’s name received calls from a number linked to the accused hitman, Fisokuhle Ntuli.
The 38-year-old starlet was dating the professional footballer at the time of his death by gunshot during a home invasion in October 2014.
