Liverpool Kick Off 2024 with Winning Start
Liverpool will be proud to start 2024 at the top of the English Premier League (EPL) after claiming a 4-2 victory over Newcastle United yesterday, Monday 1 January.
Crowds were undeterred by the torrents of wind and rain at Anfield Stadium in Liverpool, England, as they gathered to watch the first match of the year.
The Reds dominated the first half of the match, with the Magpies grimly holding on to their defensive techniques. However, striker Mohamed Salah scored a point for the home side four minutes after the second half kicked off, sparking excitement.
Newcastle retaliated at the 54th-minute mark, as striker Alexander Isak claimed the first mark for the visitors with the help of his teammate, Anthony Gordon.
Curtis Jones restored Liverpool’s lead in the 74th minute, leaving the fans on the edge of their seats. Four minutes later, Cody Gakpo brought the scoreboard to 3-1 in favour of the hosts.
Magpies defender, Sven Botman, fought his way back into the game with another goal at the 81st minute.
However, Salah’s penalty goal at the 86th-minute mark sealed the deal, leaving Newcastle to limp home.
With a three-point lead at the top of the EPL table and the joint-highest shots on goal this season, Liverpool are gearing up to be serious title challengers this year.
