Lizzo to Star as Rock Pioneer Sister Rosetta Tharpe

Lizzo will be taking on her first leading film role when she portrays Sister Rosetta Tharpe in “Rosetta”, an upcoming biopic about the pioneering musician.
The film, currently in development at Amazon MGM Studios, will explore Tharpe’s influence on rock ‘n’ roll, her defiant spirit and her hidden love for another woman.
In addition to starring in the film, the 36-year-old “Truth Hurts” hitmaker will serve as a producer alongside Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker. While a director has yet to be announced, the screenplay is being written by Natalie Chaidez and Kwynn Perry.
Sister Rosetta Tharpe, often called the “Godmother of Rock & Roll”, was a gospel musician whose innovative guitar style influenced musical icons such as Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry and Johnny Cash. She was inducted posthumously into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.
Lizzo, known for her powerhouse vocals and bold persona, has previously appeared in “Hustlers” and “The Mandalorian”. Sharing the news via Instagram on Monday, 24 March, she called the role an “honour” and celebrated Tharpe’s impact on music history.
