Man City Fan in Coma After Attack
Manchester City supporter, Guido De Pauw, was attacked by Club Brugge fans after his side won 5-1, remains in a coma but is reportedly stable.
On Tuesday, 19 October, Man City travelled to face Club Brugge for their Champions League clash at Jan Breydel Stadium, Belgium – a meeting that left the 63-year-old Belgian fighting for his life.
While on his way back home from the game, De Pauw and his son, Jurgen, were accosted by five opposing side fans – four in their 20s and one in his 40s – who assaulted De Pauw senior.
According to his son, De Pauw’s club scarf was pulled off from his neck, and when he tried to retrieve it, he was severely beaten.
Belgium’s public prosecutors have confirmed that the perpetrators have appeared in court – three were released under strict conditions on Friday, 22 October – while the remaining two are still in custody in the northwestern city of Ghent.
Club Brugge released a statement declaring their cooperation with the authorities, and saying: “Our thoughts and best wishes go out to the family and friends of [De Pauw], who remains in hospital.”
