Mokwena Speaks Out After Lorch Video Goes Viral
Mamelodi Sundowns coach, Rhulani Mokwena, has lifted the lid on the conversation he had with Thembinkosi Lorch, after a video featuring the latter went viral.
After Sundowns won their seventh successive Premier Soccer League championship last Saturday, 25 May, Lorch celebrated by partying it up all weekend – come Sunday, 26 May, he was dancing merrily with two unknown women at a pub, a moment that was captured on his Instagram livestream.
The video clip quickly went viral, incurring the surprise and wrath of football fans on social media. This prompted the overwhelmed 30-year-old attacking midfielder to reach out to Mokwena.
“He phoned me, and he was in tears, and that broke me, for sure,” the coach told host Andile Ncube on MetroFM earlier this week. “Because I’m close to my players, when my players are crying and are emotional, I get emotional and I cry, and I feel their pain, too.”
Despite being “extremely disappointed” in Lorch, Mokwena also empathised with him: “Lorch is human, like me … I’m probably even more imperfect than him and I probably make more mistakes than him.”
Nevertheless, said Mokwena, public figures like Lorch need to remember that they are always under scrutiny and that their actions speak for themselves.
“We also have to understand the role we hold in society, that says ours is to inspire and educate and serve. We’ve got a bigger role than just what people think.”
