Nigerian Government to Unban Twitter “Very Soon”
A controversial Twitter ban that has been implemented in Nigeria since June will be lifted soon.
For the past three months, Twitter has been inaccessible to the public after the Nigerian government suspended it when the social media platform removed a tweet from President Muhammadu Buhari.
The tweet in question saw the president threatening to punish regional secessionists, which Twitter said had violated its rules. Since its suspension, citizens and human rights activists have criticised the government for hindering businesses and undermining freedom of expression.
On Wednesday, 15 September, Information and Culture Minister Lai Mohammed announced during a media scrum that they had been in “productive and quite respectful” talks with the online giant.
Mohammed elaborated: “I want to assure you that the time that Twitter operation has been suspended, between the time it has been suspended, and when it will be restored is by far, much, much shorter … it’s just going to be very, very soon, just take my word for that.”
