Pirates Sink AmaZulu to Reach Betway Premiership Summit
Orlando Pirates climbed to the top of the Betway Premiership on Tuesday night, 3 February, following a clinical 2-0 victory over AmaZulu FC at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
The result moves the Buccaneers three points clear of Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs, ending Usuthu’s unbeaten start to the calendar year.
Relebohile Mofokeng was the standout performer, opening the scoring in the 15th minute by heading home a precise cross from Tshepang Moremi. Despite AmaZulu’s disciplined defensive structure and dangerous counter-attacks, Pirates controlled the majority of the possession and territorial battle.
The home side threatened late on, but goalkeeper Sipho Chaine produced a vital save to prevent a shock equaliser. Mofokeng eventually doubled the lead in the 94th minute, with his effort deflecting in off Darren Johnson to secure the three points.
Reflecting on the performance, coach Abdeslam Ouaddou told a local publication: “I think we did it, lots of positive things, of course, the way that we controlled the game, opportunities that we created as well.”
The victory takes the Pirates to 35 points on the Premier Soccer League table, cementing their position as league leaders as the title race intensifies.
