Placebo’s Brian Molko Charged with Defamation in Italy

Placebo frontman Brian Molko has been charged with defamation in Italy after criticising Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni during a 2023 performance in Turin.

While on stage at the Sonic Park festival, Molko referred to Meloni as a “fascist” and “racist,” prompting legal action from the far-right leader.

Following an investigation, prosecutors in Turin charged the 52-year-old musician with “contempt of the institutions,” an offence under Italian law that forbids defamatory comments aimed at the government, parliament, courts or military.

If convicted, he faces a fine of up to €5 000 and being summoned directly to trial. Though public defamation in Italy can result in imprisonment, authorities have indicated Molko is unlikely to receive a custodial sentence.

Meloni, leader of the nationalist Brothers of Italy party, has implemented controversial right-wing policies restricting LGBTQ+ rights and immigration. Her government has also been accused of using defamation suits to silence critics.

Placebo, known for their androgynous image and lyrical themes exploring sexuality, mental health and substance usage, have yet to comment on the charges.
