Rodrigo Bentancur Charged by FA Over Racial Slur
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been charged by the Football Association (FA) over a racist remark about his teammate, Son Heung-min.
The incident occurred during a June television interview in Uruguay, where Bentancur made a comment suggesting that Son and his cousin “look the same.” Bentancur later apologised for his remark, describing it as a “very bad joke.”
Son, captain of the Lilywhites, acknowledged his teammate’s mistake but emphasised their continued unity, stating they remain “brothers” on and off the pitch.
The FA has charged Bentancur with misconduct under Rule E3, alleging that his behaviour was improper and that he used abusive or insulting language. The offence is considered an “aggravated breach” because it included a reference to nationality or race.
The incident led to numerous complaints to the anti-discrimination charity, Kick It Out, which highlighted concerns over discrimination affecting East Asian and other demographics.
Tottenham have expressed their support for Son and their commitment to fighting discrimination in all its forms.
Bentancur has until Thursday, 19 September, to respond to the charge.
