South Africa: Mass Vaccination Site to Go Live Soon
A mass coronavirus vaccination site is set to be opened at a major venue in Cape Town, South Africa.
On Thursday, 24 June, the Western Cape government announced a joint venture between Discovery Health and the Western Cape Department of Health, whereby a vaccination centre will be opened at the Cape Town International Conference Centre in July.
They explained in a statement: “The parties will jointly manage the site day to day to ensure that it runs efficiently and effectively, ensuring a seamless vaccination experience for all who attend, both medical scheme members and uninsured residents of the metro.”
The site – which will house 50 stations – is expected to administer over 750 000 free inoculations over a period of six months. Those who are registered on the Electronic Vaccination Data System will be eligible to receive these jabs.
It will also have the capability to store and administer the Pfizer-BioNTech double dose vaccine, as well as the Johnson & Johnson single dose vaccine.
Western Cape Premier Alan Winde welcomed the collaboration, saying: “Every person, no matter where they live or what they earn, should have access to life-saving vaccines.”
