Southampton Bolster Defence with Sugawara Signing
Southampton have strengthened their squad with the acquisition of Japanese right-back, Yukinari Sugawara, from Dutch side AZ Alkmaar.
The 24-year-old defender has penned a four-year contract with the English Premier League newcomers for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around £6 million. The club announced the signing via their website on Sunday, 14 July.
Sugawara, who has been capped 13 times by Japan, arrives at St Mary’s with a wealth of experience having made nearly 200 appearances for AZ Alkmaar. Known for his attacking prowess, the footballer is seen as a key addition to Southampton’s squad.
Manager Russell Martin expressed his delight at securing Sugawara, who was a long-term target for the club. The club’s style of play, characterised by possession-based football, was a major factor in attracting the Japanese international to the south coast.
During his onboarding interview, the new signee revealed that a pre-season match against Southampton last year had been a deciding factor in the move between teams.
“I felt Southampton is a really good club. When Southampton gave me an offer, I said yes after one second,” he said cheerfully.
