Stellenbosch Book Spot in MTN8 Semi-Finals
Stellenbosch FC are on their way to the semi-finals of the MTN8 Cup, following their 1-0 victory over SuperSport United on Sunday, 13 August.
Playing away at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, Limpopo, Stellenbosch were kept on their toes by SuperSport, who maintained a 57% possession of the ball for the entirety of the match. By the same token, Stellies were also able to keep their opponents at bay.
After 90 minutes, the goalless match entered extra time. Ultimately, it was Stellenbosch who were able to progress to the semi-finals when midfielder Andre de Jong slotted a neat goal into the back of the net in the 99th minute.
The victory marks the first time that Stellenbosch will be partaking in the MTN8 semi-finals. Indeed, a recent pre-match interview from coach Steve Barker almost proved prophetic:
“Having a young squad who got the taste of almost getting to a final, I can see that they are starting to believe. As a club and as players, it’s our fifth year in the PSL and we believe that we have matured enough to … believe that we can win a trophy of this nature.”
Stellenbosch will face Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 semi-finals, the first leg of which will take place on the weekend of 2-3 September.
