Taiwo Awoniyi in Induced Coma After Abdominal Surgeryz

Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi is in an induced coma following emergency abdominal surgery after suffering a ruptured intestine.
The 27-year-old footballer was injured during Forest’s 2-2 draw with Leicester City on Sunday, 11 May, when he collided with the visitors’ goalpost. Awoniyi initially received treatment on the pitch and continued playing, despite showing visible signs of discomfort.
However, after further medical assessments, it was revealed that his injury was more severe than initial thoughts, prompting immediate surgery on Tuesday, 13 May. The Nottinghamshire club has confirmed that his condition is not life-threatening, and the coma is intended to help control his heart rate and limit movement during recovery.
Forest expressed frustration over the medical team’s decision to allow Awoniyi to continue playing, with owner Evangelos Marinakis approaching manager Nuno Espirito Santo after the match.
It was later made clear through official channels that there was no confrontation, but emphasised the seriousness of the situation. Awoniyi is said to be “recovering well” after the procedure, though his immediate future remains uncertain.
