Bucs Coach Takes Digs at “Showboating” Team

Orlando Pirates manager Abdeslam Ouaddou is threatening to quit his post in the wake of his team’s “showboating” antics on Saturday, 12 September.

The Buccaneers were in CAF Champions League action against La Cure Sylvester SC at Orlando Amstel Arena in Soweto, Gauteng.

By the second half, the hosts were leading 3-1 against the Mauritian outfit. It was at this point of the game that the Sowetan club apparently abandoned urgency in favour of skylarking on the pitch.

In a post-match interview, Ouaddou lambasted his men’s second-half performance, or lack thereof.

“The rhythm dropped when we stopped being serious, when we started to showboat,” he remarked. “We have to understand that if we have to win the CAF Champions League, if we want to be ambitious to go far, we really need to understand that football is going forward and scoring goals.”

Complaining that the team’s lack of seriousness merely “serves the ego”, the 47-year-old Moroccan coach added harshly: “The moment I will accept this showboating, … I will leave everything and I will pack my luggage and I [will] stop training, because … my word is winning games. And if they want to continue doing this, please, [do so] without me!”

Orlando Pirates will take on African Stars in the final round of the CAF Champions League qualifying group stages this Sunday, 20 September.
