Tuchel Regrets Missing Out on a Taste of Azteca Turf
Thomas Tuchel has admitted to a peculiar post-match remorse following England’s dramatic 3-2 World Cup knockout victory against co-hosts Mexico.
Despite leading his ten-man side to a famous win, the Three Lions boss wished he had consumed part of the pitch to preserve the memory physically.
Reflecting on the emotional triumph, the German head coach revealed, “I texted a friend after the match and I just wrote, ‘I regret that I didn’t eat some grass after the match to keep something from this in my body forever.’”
Beyond his unusual craving, Tuchel believes the match cemented a profound unity within the squad, particularly when players rushed to shield teammate Jordan Henderson after he broke his arm during the celebrations.
The campaign ultimately ended with England securing third place after a semi-final defeat to Argentina and a victory over France. Reflecting on their US journey of eight wins, one draw, and a single loss, Tuchel feels deeply connected to his squad, remarking, “it feels like they are my players now.”
With Nations League matches against Spain, Croatia, and Czechia on the horizon, Tuchel remains focused on building towards Euro 2028.
