Alonso Secures Marco Palestra in First Chelsea Transfer
Chelsea have officially confirmed the signing of Italian international defender Marco Palestra from Atalanta in a deal worth a reported £47 million, including add-ons.
The 21-year-old defender has agreed to a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with an option for an additional year, becoming the first acquisition of the Xabi Alonso era.
The Blues hijacked a nearly completed agreement with Italian giants Inter Milan by offering a superior transfer fee and a more lucrative wage package. Palestra arrives with a burgeoning reputation, having been named Serie A Defender of the Year last season during an exceptional 37-game loan spell at Cagliari.
Statistically, the attack-minded defender led Europe’s top ten leagues for successful dribbles by a defender (70), and recently earned his first two senior caps for Italy. He has shown a great capacity to play as a conventional full-back or wing-back on either flank, and his tactical versatility will perfectly complement Alonso’s back-three system.
Palestra expressed his delight at joining Chelsea, citing the chance to work with Alonso as a decisive factor. His high-profile arrival is expected to kickstart a busy summer overhaul in West London after the club finished in a disappointing 10th place last season.
