Bafana Bafana Crumble on World Stage
The 2026 FIFA World Cup ignited in historic fashion on 11 June as co-hosts Mexico secured a dramatic 2-0 victory over South Africa in front of 80,000 fans at the iconic Estadio Azteca. It was a historic showcase that marked the first ever World Cup opening match to feature three red cards.
Mexico settled their first-day nerves early when Julián Quiñones pounced on an error to smash a low strike past goalkeeper Ronwen Williams in the ninth minute. Reflecting on the initial pressure, Mexico forward Quiñones stated, “I’m happy and excited to score my first World Cup goal… your legs will shake starting out.”
South Africa’s hopes of a comeback unraveled rapidly in the second half. Midfielder Sphephelo Sithole was shown a straight red card in the 50th minute for denying a goalscoring opportunity. El Tri capitalised on their numerical advantage when Raúl Jiménez headed home a Roberto Alvarado cross to seal the 2-0 victory.
The match concluded in chaotic scenes as South Africa’s Themba Zwane was dismissed for a facial strike, followed by a late red card for Mexico’s César Montes. Commenting on the demanding standard, Williams remarked, “If you make mistakes, they will punish you at this level.”
