Black Coffee Opens Up About Severe Travel Accident
Black Coffee has revealed that his upper spinal cord was damaged when he was involved in a recent plane accident.
The 47-year-old musician – who is privately known as Nkosinathi Maphumulo – spoke to Kaya FM host Thabo “T-Bose” Mokwele on Friday, 1 March, for the first time since the incident.
According to reports, the plane crashed in early January. Maphumulo was on a South American tour at the time, and had just three stops left.
The interview was the first time Maphumulo has spoken out about the experience. The deejay revealed that he had been forced to find a new aeroplane to take him from Brazil to Argentina when the company he usually hired failed to charter a private flight for him.
Maphumulo went on to say that he had been apprehensive about the newly chartered aircraft as it “looked old”. Despite his reservations, the megastar was committed to seeing his Argentinian fans and climbed aboard.
According to Maphumulo, the flight reached cruising altitude without a problem. However, moments later, severe turbulence threw him to the floor of the plane, after which he hit the ceiling and felt a “sharp pain”.
He later called himself “half man, half machine”, as he had undergone a five-hour-long surgery to fix the damage.
