Caitlyn Jenner Looking to Govern California
Caitlyn Jenner announced on Friday, 23 April, that she has political ambitions and has started the necessary preparations to run as a candidate for governor of California, USA.
The 71-year-old “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” star filed the initial paperwork to become the first transgender American to ascend to the high-profile position – and replace the incumbent, Democratic governor Gavin Newsom, in a recall election expected to happen later this year.
On the same day, the former Olympic champion sent out a press release that said “Californians want better and deserve better from their governor” and will presumably run her campaign as a Republican.
Jenner is hoping to capitalise on Newsom’s handling of the state’s coronavirus response, which has resulted in the state having the highest number of new infections.
However, her past might hurt her chances as she was a reluctant supporter of former US President, Donald Trump – Jenner supported his presidency bid in 2016 but later came to criticise several of his policies, some of which discriminated against transgender people.
The most famous non-politician to previously sit in the governor’s seat was Hollywood actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who served for over seven years after taking office in 2003.
