Chiefs Begin 2025/26 Season with Impressive 2-0 Win
Kaizer Chiefs marked a winning start to their 2025/26 Betway Premiership campaign with a 2-0 victory over Stellenbosch FC on Sunday, 10 August.
The match at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town, Western Cape, saw an early turning point when Stellenbosch’s Siviwe Nkwali was shown a red card in the 12th minute for a foul on Mduduzi Shabalala, leaving the hosts with ten men.
Amakhosi took full advantage of the situation, with Nkosingiphile Ngcobo curling a stunning free-kick into the top corner to give the visitors the lead. Despite some strong attacking play from Stellenbosch – including a shot at the 28th-minute mark from Sanele Barns that rattled the post – Chiefs held firm.
The match was sealed in the final moments when Ashley du Preez was fouled in the box, and Glody Lilepo confidently converted the resulting penalty to secure a 2-0 win for the visitors.
It was a statement victory for Chiefs, who had struggled early last season, reminding rivals Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates of their title ambitions. With assistant coach Khalil Ben Youssef at the helm in Nasreddine Nabi’s absence, the Chiefs’ clean sheet and strong performance sets a promising tone for the season ahead.
