EPL Referee: Hypocrite Klopp Attempts to Influence Officials
Former Premier League referee, Mark Clattenburg, has accused Liverpool boss, Jurgen Klopp, of being a “hypocrite” over Manchester United penalties.
Clattenburg says the 53-year-old tactician’s latest complaints about the number of penalties awarded to the Red Devils is an attempt to influence match officials.
The 45-year-old Englishman further accused Klopp of using Sir Alex Ferguson’s playbook of mind games to get inside referee Paul Tierney’s head ahead of a huge clash against arch rivals Man United on Sunday, 17 January.
The English official said: “First, he [Klopp] sounds like a hypocrite if he is suggesting United’s players are looking to win penalties. The likes of Mo Salah and [Sadio] Mane are just as capable of employing similar tactics.”
He added: “He is edgy, he does not like losing and he never has. He gets prickly. But he is wrong to suggest there is an aura around United that sees them given favourable decisions.”
However, Clattenburg admits that Man United’s squad go down too easily in the box, but insists that there is no conspiracy on the part of referees and officials.
