Gaddafi’s Son Running for Libyan President
The son of late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi is all set to run as a candidate in the upcoming presidential elections.
On Sunday, 14 November, Saif al-Islam Gaddafi arrived in the southwestern city of Sabha, where he submitted his application at the offices of the High National Electoral Commission.
Photos from the event show Gaddafi with a grey beard, wearing glasses, and donning a traditional brown robe and turban. In a video, he is heard citing verses from the Koran: “God always prevails in his purpose, even if the unbelievers hate it.”
His application comes ten years after an uprising swept his controversial father out of power. The younger Gaddafi was then captured and kept in detention by the Zintan militia. In 2015, he was sentenced to death for war crimes, but it was later overturned. However, he is still wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged crimes against humanity.
The elections will take place on 24 December, with the hopes that the winning candidate will help put an end to the armed conflict in the oil-rich country.
