New Amakhosi Era Demands Squad Overhaul

Kaizer Chiefs have accelerated their ruthless roster adjustments ahead of a highly anticipated new era under incoming head coach Fernando Da Cruz. The Soweto giants have parted ways with versatile defender Happy Mashiane and attacking midfielder George Matlou, signalling a major strategic clearout at Naturena.

Mashiane’s exit ends a prominent seven-year association with the senior team. Utilised as both a left-back and an advanced winger during his tenure, the 28-year-old ultimately fell out of favour as the technical team clears the decks for players who fit Da Cruz’s specific tactical system.

Meanwhile, Matlou leaves after a four-year stay plagued by persistent injuries. Though he featured in the squad that lifted the 2024/25 Nedbank Cup to end Amakhosi’s lengthy silverware drought, he managed just four appearances last season. Expressing gratitude for his service, the club stated:

“We thank George for his commitment and contribution to Amakhosi and wish him well in his future career.”

Outgoing co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef recently warned that extensive upgrades are mandatory if the Glamour Boys are to bridge the gap with their rivals, declaring that management “must sign five immediate top-tier players” to make the side truly competitive.
