New Calendar For Premier League

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has officially mapped out the upcoming 2026/27 domestic football calendar, confirming a significant shift in the traditional season-opening schedule to better manage player fatigue.

According to an official document issued by acting CEO Mato Madlala, the league intends to kick off the top-flight marathon immediately rather than staging a cup competition first. The circular confirmed: “The Premier Division team will kick off their fixtures on the weekend of the 1st of August with the Betway Premiership.”

This marks a strategic change for South African football. Traditionally, the top-eight tournament opens the soccer season, but the PSL has moved it into a secondary slot to provide breathing room following the 2026 FIFA World Cup window. The statement further detailed that the beloved “MTN8 competition will then start on the 8th of August,” ensuring high-octane action follows the opening league weekend.

Defending league champions Orlando Pirates, alongside heavyweights Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns, have returned to their respective pre-season training camps to prepare for the revamped August schedule. Meanwhile, newly promoted Motsepe Foundation Championship sides Milford FC and Cape Town City are finalizing their squads for the top-flight step-up.
