Pioneering Gay Imam Muhsin Hendricks Gunned Down

Muhsin Hendricks, the world’s first openly gay imam and a leading advocate for LGBTQ+ Muslims, was shot dead in what’s believed to be a targeted attack near Gqeberha, South Africa.

CCTV footage shows two masked gunmen ambushing his vehicle on Saturday, 15 February, firing multiple shots before fleeing. Authorities have not yet confirmed the motive, but many fear it was a hate crime.

The 57-year-old prayer leader was known for challenging conservative Islamic teachings on sexuality. He founded The Inner Circle and Al-Ghurbaah mosque in Cape Town, Western Cape, providing a safe space for queer Muslims to reconcile their faith with their identity.

Despite facing threats, Hendricks remained committed to his work, once stating that authenticity mattered more to him than fear.

Tributes have poured in from around the world, with LGBTQ+ organisations and religious leaders condemning the murder. Although some Muslim bodies reaffirmed their theological opposition to same-sex relationships, they rejected violence as a response.

However, social media reactions exposed deep divisions, with some individuals even supporting the attack.

Hendricks’ killing highlights the ongoing struggle for LGBTQ+ rights within religious communities. Activists are calling for a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served, while his legacy of inclusion and compassion continues to inspire worldwide.
