Raygun Apologises to Australian Breakdancing Community

Australian breakdancer-turned-viral sensation, Rachael “Raygun” Gunn, has opened up about her controversial breakdance routine that broke the Internet.

Last month, Raygun’s routine at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games – which included kangaroo-inspired hops and sweep-like motions – notoriously earned her zero points from the judging panel. Nevertheless, it garnered her tons of love (and spawned a fair amount of memes) on social media.

However, in her first post-Olympics interview with an Australian broadcaster on Wednesday, 4 September, the 37-year-old university lecturer was apologetic about the “backlash” that the local breakdancing community received in the wake of her performance.

“I am very sorry for the backlash that the community has experienced, but I can’t control how people react,” she said. “Unfortunately, we just need some more resources in Australia for us to have a chance to be world champions.”

Stating that she will be temporarily taking a step back from competing in breakdancing, Raygun added: “In the last year, I have trained my hardest … I have really put my body through it, put my mind through it. But if that’s not good enough for someone, what can I say?

“I would much rather focus on the positives out of this, and the positive responses and the joy that I brought people.”
