Ronaldo Araujo Squashes Ilkay Gundogan Beef
All is well between Barcelona teammates Ronaldo Araujo and Ilkay Gundogan following their public war of words last week.
Last Tuesday, 16 April, during the second leg of Barcelona’s UEFA Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), Araujo was red-carded in the 29th minute.
After the match – which PSG ultimately won 4-1 – Gundogan criticised Araujo’s performance. He also seemingly blamed the Uruguayan centre-back for giving the game away to the Parisien giants.
Two days later at a book launch, Araujo declared that he preferred “to keep what I think to myself” because “I have codes and values that must be respected”, apparently implying that the German midfielder lacked class for his remarks.
However, following Barca’s 3-2 loss to Real Madrid in their El Clasico match last Sunday, 21 April, Araujo confirmed that there are no longer any ill feelings between him and Gundogan.
“He apologised and for me it goes no further. There’s nothing more to say,” he told reporters in a post-match interview.
Araujo added: “It’s been a sad week, but I’m strong mentally. I worked hard for that … There is nothing to say about how much I give on the field; everyone knows that I cannot be reprimanded [about giving it all] on the pitch.”
