Ronaldo: Of Bottled Talent and Last-Minute Euro 2020 Saves

Cristiano Ronaldo has consistently proven that he is lightning in a bottle, and this was made very apparent during Portugal’s UEFA Euro 2020 match against France on Wednesday night, 23 June, at the Ferenc Puskas Stadium in Hungary.

The 36-year-old superstar forward helped his home team in their 2-2 draw against the Blues with a penalty kick after the first 30 minutes, giving Portugal an early lead.

However, the scoreboard soon changed just before the half-time whistle when French striker, Karim Benzema, capitalised on a penalty that was granted after his team-mate Kylian Mbappe was fouled by Nelson Semedo. Benzema added another not two minutes later, putting France in charge.

Ronaldo soon struck again 15 minutes into the second half with another spot-kick for the equaliser.

The goal marked yet another record as it was his 109th international goal, putting him on par with former Iran player, Ali Daei, for most international goals in history.

Unfortunately, the celebrations were clouded by a group of irate fans who started tossing bottles at him. The fracas did little to change the final result of the game.

Portugal will next see Belgium this Sunday, 27 June, while France and Switzerland clash the following evening.
