Sibisi Named Orlando Pirates Captain for New Season

Orlando Pirates have announced Nkosinathi Sibisi will be their new captain for the 2025/26 campaign, effective Wednesday, 30 July.

The appointment follows the retirement of long-serving skipper Innocent Maela, who led the side from 2022 after taking over from club legend, Happy Jele.

The decision was made through a confidential player vote, with Sibisi emerging as the clear choice. The 29-year-old defender, who joined the Buccaneers from Golden Arrows in 2022, has previously worn the armband in Maela’s absence and was also recently named Bafana Bafana captain for international friendlies.

Sibisi is elated with his new role, recently telling a local publication: “It is truly an honour and privilege to be named captain of this great institution. It’s a responsibility that I accept, and promise to fulfil the role in the best way I possibly can.”

He will be supported by Thapelo Xoki and teenage prospect Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who have been appointed as vice-captains. The 19-year-old Mbokazi’s promotion highlights the club’s faith in his leadership potential, as he has already earned praise from Bafana coach Hugo Broos for his maturity and decision-making.

Sibisi’s first official match as captain will be the MTN8 quarter-final against Polokwane City FC this Saturday, 2 August.
