Streetwear Designer Virgil Abloh Dead at 41
The fashion world is in mourning following the news of Virgil Abloh’s death at the age of 41.
Abloh died following complications with cancer on Sunday, 28 November – he was diagnosed with cardiac angiosarcoma in 2019, but had kept it private until now.
Born in the United States to Ghanaian immigrant parents, he found his first big break working with Kanye West in 2009. During this time, he caught the eye of Louis Vuitton CEO, Michael Burke.
Abloh made a name for himself working for the French fashion label, and eventually founded his own brand, Off-White. His inclusive, expansive vision towards clothing drew comparisons to artistic giants such as Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons. His willingness to collaborate saw other brands such as Nike and Evan flocking to him.
Besides fashion, he also dabbled in artwork and DJing, which saw him collaborating with other big names in each respective biz – such as Takashi Murakami and Pop Smoke – bringing him more accolades and fame.
Tributes from fans and celebrities have poured in from all over the world. Model Gigi Hadid and Hailey Bieber took to Twitter to share their kind words for Abloh.
He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Shannon, along with his two children, Lowe and Grey, his sister Edwina, and his parents Nee and Eunice.
