Sundowns’ Williams Opens Up About Club World Cup Error

Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has opened up about the mistake that cost Mamelodi Sundowns the win over Borussia Dortmund in their FIFA Club World Cup clash on Saturday, 21 June.

Sundowns held a 1-0 lead in the match – which took place at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio – before Williams’ accidental pass to Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha in the 16th minute led to an equaliser.

Despite a determined performance by the South African team, Dortmund ultimately prevailed with a 4-3 victory. This result sees the German outfit currently in second place in Group F with four points, while Sundowns are in third with three points.

Speaking to the media during a post-match press conference, Williams owned up to his error while also giving his team their props.

“Of course, it’s not nice to concede a goal like that, but we are a team that takes risks,” the 33-year-old shot-stopper said. “Before I received the ball, I saw [Teboho Mokoena] there, but he got a call from Marcelo [Allende] to move away, so it was just one of those unfortunate situations, but we learn from it and we keep going.

“We had a very good chance in the first half, and I’m just proud of the boys for their efforts and the desire to keep fighting. Now, the gap is not that big. I think we have proved that.”
