Ukraine: Presidential Aide Survives Assassination Attempt

A tope aide in the Ukrainian government escaped unharmed following an attempted assassination by a person or persons unknown.

On Wednesday morning, 22 September, Serhiy Shefir left his home near Lisnyky village – located outside of the country’s capital, Kyiv – when his car was targeted on a forested stretch of road.

Per Shefir’s account, a hail of bullets struck the car. Despite being wounded, the driver managed to continue driving until they reached safety.

The 57-year-old politician lauded the now-hospitalised driver: “At first, in shock, he tried to stop, but I think if we had stopped then, we would not be talking to you now.”

He suggested that the attempt on his life was to gain the attention of his close friend and business partner, President Volodymyr Zelensky, who was away in New York City for the United Nations General Assembly at the time.

Police authorities who combed the site of attack considers Shefir’s suggestion an underlying theme of their current investigations: that the perpetrator or perpetrators attacked him either because of his state duties, to put pressure on Ukraine’s top leadership, or to destabilise the political situation nationwide.
