4 Major PSL Records

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has seen its fair share of incredible displays of talent and amazing feats since its inception in 1996. Some even find their way into the history books and continue to be discussed to this day.

Here are four major PSL records.

Most Clean Sheets in a Season – Ronwen Williams (15)

Ronwen Williams stands out, not just because of his 1.84-metre frame, but because of his quick instincts and safe hands. He has won multiple awards for his efforts and has chalked up several records.

One of his finest performances happened during the 2022-23 South African Premiership as he kept 13 clean sheets during his Mamelodi Sundowns debut campaign. However, the following season saw him beat his personal best and he set a PSL record of 15 clean sheets.

Longest Serving Coach – Jomo Sono

Jomo “Bra J” Sono has graced South African football for over five decades and continues to inspire with his indomitable spirit and passion for talent creation.

Sono first stepped into the beautiful game in 1973 with Orlando Pirates. Since then, he has shifted between several clubs, both local and abroad. In 1983, he started his own club, Jomo Cosmos, and has remained its chairman and the team’s head coach ever since.

Longest Unbeaten Run – Mamelodi Sundowns (32 Matches)

It is no understatement that Mamelodi Sundowns are South Africa’s most successful football club. The Pretoria-based club have collected various trophies and titles over the years, and it would take an entire Wikipedia page to list their records.
One of their most impressive is the longest unbeaten run of wins, which occurred during the 2022-23 season of the DStv Premiership. For twelve months, stretching from September 2022, the club went unbeaten for 32 games consecutively.

Most Attended Match – Kaizer Chiefs vs Orlando Pirates (2015)

On 1 August 2015, FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, Gauteng, was the site of the greatest gathering of local soccer fans who scrambled to watch home team Kaizer Chiefs take on Orlando Pirates in a sporting spectacle known as the Soweto derby.

What made that day notable is the number of those in attendance: the venue has an official maximum capacity of 94 736, but the supporters in attendance clocked in at a record-setting 94 807 to see the Bucs beat Amakhosi 4-3 on penalties.
