Alisson Becker Likely to Miss Bournemouth Meeting
Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker is in a race against time to be fit for the English Premier League (EPL) match against Bournemouth on Saturday, 21 September.
Reds manager, Arne Slot, revealed that the Brazilian international – who has started all four league matches this season and recorded three clean sheets – is struggling with a muscle injury that was aggravated following their UEFA Champions League (UCL) 3-1 victory over AC Milan on Tuesday, 17 September.
Slot clarified that the 31-year-old’s injury did not happen during the UCL game – but had been a concern prior to the fixture – but has worsened in recent days.
Alisson’s participation will depend on whether he can train ahead of the Bournemouth bout, with Slot admitting the game may come too soon for the footballer. If unfit, Irish goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher is likely to fill in.
Alisson has been vocal about the increased demands on footballers due to a congested fixture schedule, highlighting the strain it places on players’ performances and fitness.
Slot, who took charge of Liverpool this summer, acknowledged the greater intensity of the EPL calendar, particularly over the festive period, compared to other European leagues. However, he stressed the need for squad rotation to manage the long season and maintain player health.
