British Company Conjures Up “Invisibility Shield”

The concept of a device that renders a person “invisible” has always been common in science fiction and fantasy, but a fledgling company in the United Kingdom aims to make it a reality.

The Invisibility Shield Company has developed a sheet of plastic that appears transparent and doesn’t require an external energy source. Instead, the precision-engineered lens array bends light away from the subject to give the impression that whatever is behind the panel is not there.

The small London venture company recently created a Kickstarter campaign for their product, which was set at a humble £5 000, but has reached an astronomical £260 793 – and there are still 32 days on the campaign left to go!

Custom shapes for this “invisibility shield” can be made (enough to hide “multiple people”, according to the Kickstarter page), and they are lightweight at less than 4.5 kilograms per panel.

The best part is that they are made from fully recyclable marine-grade materials, so you can “surprise your friends while avoiding your enemies” without worrying about your carbon footprint.

The company is still in the initial stage of finding funders, but they are expecting to make deliveries by December this year.

The tech is certainly exciting and features great potential – we will have to see what the future holds.
