Celeb Twitter Round-Up: Connie Ferguson and the Funeral Debacle

Connie Ferguson is catching strays on social media for allegedly missing the funeral of “Tsotsi” actor Presley Chweneyagae.

On 27 May, Chweneyagae passed away at the age of 40, with his death being attributed to natural causes. His funeral took place on Saturday, 7 June at Akasia Community Hall in Pretoria, Gauteng, and then he was laid to rest at Zandfontein Cemetery.

Among the star-studded mourners were actors Dr Jerry Mofokeng, Rami Chuene and Winnie Ntshaba, the latter who starred alongside Chweneyagae in the popular soapie, “The River.”

However, Ferguson is said to have not attended the funeral service, causing much confusion AND consternation among the folks lurking on Twitter/X.

User @joy_zelda was one of the first to take shots at the “Generations” star, berating her over her alleged absence. They also labelled Ferguson as “disgusting”, especially when Chweneyagae was supposedly one of her biggest supporters following the death of her husband, actor Shona Ferguson, back in 2021.

Take a look at their tweet:

So far, it has gotten over 2 200 likes and 580 comments, most of which produced responses like this one:

A lotta tweeps came out in their numbers to defend Ferguson. Many theorised that Ferguson is perhaps uncomfortable attending funerals, either because she’s still grieving over her husband’s death or for other reasons – personal reasons, which BTW, are NOT our business to know:

This caused a bit of a debate, as seen by the tweets below:

Other peeps were quick to point out that Ferguson had attended the “Kings of Jo’burg” season 3 premiere, which took place the night before in Johannesburg (Friday, 6 June). As the Netflix show’s co-producer and one of its main stars, she likely had her hands full.

With the event taking up her time (especially if it was planned way in advance), it’d be understandable that Ferguson wouldn’t have the chance to attend Chweneyagae’s funeral, doubly so if she was obligated to make time afterwards for event organisers, Netflix bigwigs, etc.

Here’s hoping Presley Chweneyagae can rest in peace without Twitter/X turning his death into a whole circus!
