Celeb Twitter Round-Up: Nando’s and Nota Baloyi Come to Legal Blows

The land of Twitter/X knows no peace, especially in Mzansi! In the ring is one of South Africa’s favourites, Nando’s, and a big name in the country’s hip-hop scene, Nhlamulo “Nota” Baloyi.

What’s the hubbub this time? Nando’s released a statement on Wednesday, 27 January, in which it rejected a lawsuit from the music exec, who is seeking R850 000 in damages from the fast food franchise for unauthorised use of Kwesta’s track, “Spirit”, in their latest advertising campaign.

The song in question samples Brenda Fassie’s “Kuyoze Kuyovalwa”, which Baloyi’s company, Urbantainment, holds the rights to. To make the tea even hotter: Kwesta used to be managed by said company.

Nando’s acknowledged the dispute while claiming that its process was “transparent” and that “all legal requirements” were communicated to Baloyi in November 2025, but no response was forthcoming.

South African netizens immediately flocked to Nando’s side as the story hit the social media waves. Many placed their faith in the beloved take-out brand.

The following day, Baloyi clapped back – with receipts! – saying that no licensing was granted in October, and Nando’s proceeded without consent, leaving themselves open for several legal challenges.

Some of the online crowd – a handful had previously warmed up – started batting for the controversial media personality, saying that Nando’s is getting a taste of their own lawfare recipe.

As always on these twirra streets, you had those silent few who chose to wait for the courts to decide who is in the wrong and must pay up.

Now we must wonder, if even after the courts have ruled and given their verdict – which must see one side take an L and another take home the W – will people change their minds? We will have to wait and see!
