Celeb Twitter Round-Up: Opera Singer Wows South African Tweeps

South Africa is full of talented musical artists. It’s just too bad that one of our own had to head overseas in order to be “discovered”.

Innocent Masuku (not to be confused with “Yizo Yizo” actor, Innocent “Bobo” Masuku) is an opera singer hailing from Secunda, Mpumalanga. Most recently, the trained tenor showed off his talent in a recent episode of “Britain’s Got Talent”.

The 33-year-old’s rousing performance of “Caruso” – which was previously covered by the likes of Andrea Bocelli and Luciano Pavarotti – wowed the judges and the audience.

Back in SA, folks – including Sports, Arts and Culture minister Zizi Kodwa – took to Twitter/X to heap praise on Masuku’s incredible vocals, with some playfully calling him a bonafide Italian:

On the other side of the coin, however, a few tweeps were frustrated that talented artists like Masuku often go unrecognised or unsupported in Mzansi, and that they very rarely receive recognition unless they make it internationally or rack up a Grammy. Others also criticised Kodwa for doing little to support these artists and furthering his own political agenda:

Very valid points to be made here. Still, we hope it means that the government and SA’s entertainment and arts sectors will now sit up and take better notice of local talent, nurturing their abilities and giving them the aid they need to further their careers.

We also hope that this won’t overshadow Innocent Masuku’s star-making performance – after all, we need some glow in the gloom right now!
