Celeb Twitter Round-Up: Samthing Soweto and DJ Maphorisa Cause Online Meltdown
Being involved in the music industry can be a fickle thing: one moment fans love you, the next moment they want to cancel you like you’re an overpriced Shein order. With that said, Samthing Soweto and DJ Maphorisa are causing a huge divide on Twitter/X.
A while back, it was revealed that Samthing Soweto would be one of the vocalists featured on “Amalanga Awafani”, an amapiano song produced by Mas Musiq and Lawd Weezy. DJ Maphorisa and TO Starquality had also landed features on the tune.
On Tuesday, 3 September, “Amalanga Awafani” was released on all major streaming platforms. Eagle-eyed fans noticed that Samthing Soweto was not credited alongside the other aforementioned musos.
The 36-year-old singer took notice as well, and he tweeted a single emoji alongside a screenshot of the song’s cover art (sans his name, of course):
Naturally, this caused outrage and confusion among the “Akanamali” hitmaker’s fans. They also homed in on Maphorisa, saying that he was to blame for leaving Samthing Soweto off the credits:
This prompted Maphorisa to go live on Instagram and make a scathing response to Samthing Soweto, as well as tell off the fans who’ve been threatening him and Mas Musiq:
“[The song] was recorded in my house,” Maphorisa is heard saying in the clip. “He owns the whole master … if you want to cancel a person, you can cancel me, I’ll bounce back. I’m strong, I believe in myself. But Mas Musiq didn’t do anything in this situation. He tried his level best to drop this song, and the young man has been frustrated because Samthing Soweto doesn’t know how to handle his business.
“You just sabotaged yourself just because you are greedy and want to own all the masters of the songs … Stop sabotaging us and making us look bad when Mas Musiq gave you a chance when we could not handle your s****.”
This garnered incredibly mixed responses from his followers, ranging from messages of support for him, to calls for him AND Samthing Soweto to both be cancelled:
Y’see? Mixed, mixed, mixed like a winter fruit and summer vegetable stir fry!
For what it’s worth, though, most streaming platforms like Spotify have since added Samthing Soweto to the song credits:
That should appease the masses … for now. But it still begs the question: where do Samthing Soweto and DJ Maphorisa go from here?
We’ve got a sneaky feeling that the fallout from this debacle is far from over!
