Celeb Twitter Round-Up: Tributes Pour in For Siphiwe Mkhonza

The South African footballing fraternity has lost one of their beloved brothers: Siphiwe Mkhonza has died at the age of 45.

On Tuesday, 5 March, Mkhonza’s family released a statement, in which they announced that the former Kaizer Chiefs centre-back passed away at his home in Roodepoort, Gauteng, not long after he was recently treated in-hospital for a lengthy kidney infection.

His old club Amakhosi also confirmed the tragic news on Twitter/X:

Affectionately known as “Dr Mnandi” by his fans, Mkhonza played for Chiefs from 2004 and 2007: during that time, he became a legend in his own right after helping lift multiple domestic championships.

When he retired in 2012, Mkhonza became a football analyst at the South African Broadcasting Corporation. His humorous yet thoughtful commentary on the beautiful game made him a popular on-air personality.

Mkhonza is survived by his girlfriend Nondumiso Masengemi, their three children, his parents and his brother. Details regarding his memorial service and funeral are expected to be shared in due course.

Over on Twitter/X, tweeps were mourning in their numbers over the loss of Dr Mnandi:

Tributes from the likes of Sports, Arts and Culture minister Zizi Kodwa poured in across the platform, along with condolences for Mkhonza’s family and friends:

Indeed, rest in eternal power, Dr Mnandi – you will be sorely missed!
