Celeb Twitter Round-Up: Tyla Wins, Political Parties Get Online Shade
Tyla’s historic second win in the African Music Performance category at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday night, 1 February, raised South Africa’s profile on the global stage, and Saffers celebrated all across the online lands… then the politicians showed up.
The Democratic Alliance and Economic Freedom Fighters both jostled for some of that sweet airtime and the result had folks throwing digital hands almost immediately.
The African National Congress Secretary-General, Fikile Mbalula, is infamous for never missing an opportunity to grab the online spotlight. Ever since the Government of National Unity was formed in 2024, Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, has also been grabbing rides on the social media hype train.
South Africans have always endured a particularly prickly relationship with the country’s political parties, especially when it comes to the nation’s victories, and they don’t hold back when making their feelings known!
A couple of Mzansi’s inhabitants made it clear how the celebrations of their public servants were perceived.
You had the occasional moment of positivity…
Then it was right back to the political bashing, with most either telling them to go away, get a job, or to quit using every bit of positive news as a shameless self-promo. There are bigger problems plaguing the country and the frustration is huge!
There’s always someone asking the real questions and making sure that the optics of the well wishes don’t get cast in a certain light.
In the end, Mzansi has made its voice heard and the upcoming local government elections will make it all too clear where everyone stands.
Until then, everyone wants to bask in the wholesome vibes and enjoy that Tyla won a Grammy and has a new album, “A-Pop”, coming out later this year!
