Dricus du Plessis Makes Mzansi Proud
Many South Africans are ready to sing the praises of Dricus du Plessis after he was crowned the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight champion on Sunday, 21 January.
The 30-year-old mixed martial artist became the first man from the African country to claim the title after taking on American, Sean Strickland, at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Canada.
“Wow. The emotions I felt when I heard the judges’ scores being read,” Du Plessis said in the post-fight press conference, before he added: “It felt like 15 years of work, of dreaming and sacrifices came together in that one single sentence.”
The UFC star athlete’s parents – who were on scene to show their support – quickly won the hearts of many social media users when clips of their reactions to their son’s win began to go viral.
In one video clip, Du Plessis’ mother can be heard telling him that she’s proud of him. In another, he can be seen sharing a tight embrace with his father.
Apparently the fight wasn’t only of interest to South Africans, as rapper Drake allegedly placed a bet of more than R13 million against Du Plessis winning.
Perhaps he’ll think twice before betting against a South African next time!
