Ex-Chiefs Defender Eric Mathoho Eyes New Club

Local legend Eric “Tower” Mathoho is not keen to hang up his boots just yet, and looks ready to join a new club.

The 33-year-old centre-back will be leaving Kaizer Chiefs at the end of the 2022/23 season after 11 years of service, which included 211 appearances and scoring 19 goals.

Chiefs coach, Arthur Zwane, is reportedly taking in all the hard lessons of the current year, and already planning for the 2023/24 campaign by opening the door for new signings as well as releasing players who are looking for greener pastures.

It didn’t take long for rival clubs to show interest in Mathoho, with rumours claiming that TS Galaxy are looking to sign up the former Bafana Bafana defender as captain of their squad. Evidence supporting the move comes from Galaxy recently selling crucial backline player, Given Msimango, to Amakhosa in order to make room for their new golden boy.

Some fans are pondering how it will all come about as news has recently surfaced that Galaxy is in financial dire straits and is currently on sale, despite denials from owner, Tim Sukazi.

Other clubs that have shown interest in Tower include Stellenbosch FC, SuperSport United and Sekhukhune United. However, it remains to be seen who he will sign up with in the end.

One thing is certain: Chiefs fans will be in for a surprise when next they see Mathoho sporting a new jersey.
