Fernandes Leads Portugal to 2-0 Victory Over Uruguay
Bruno Fernandes is Portugal’s star and guardian angel after scoring a double against Uruguay in their FIFA World Cup match at Lusail Iconic Stadium in Lusail, Qatar on Monday, 28 November.
After a goalless first half, Fernandes opened the scoring with a cross in the 54th minute. Although Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo claimed it as his own goal as a result of a header (albeit a glancing one), officials awarded the goal to Fernandes, thus denying Ronaldo of his ninth overall World Cup goal.
The 28-year-old attacking midfielder was then awarded (and successfully netted) a penalty following a handball by Uruguayan defender Jose Gimenez.
This allowed Portugal to win 2-0 against Uruguay, which means that they have progressed to the knock-out stages of the tournament along with France and Brazil.
Fernandes and his team-mates will be back in action this Friday, 2 December, when they take on South Korea at Education City Stadium in Al Rayyan.
