Gareth Southgate Addresses Fans’ Response to Slovenia Draw

England manager Gareth Southgate says fans are creating an “unusual atmosphere” as fans reacted to the team’s 0-0 draw with Slovenia in Cologne, Germany on Tuesday, 25 June.

Despite their lacklustre Euro 2024 performance, the Three Lions topped Group C with five points from three matches, securing a place in the last 16.

The goalless draw was reportedly met with boos and plastic beer cups being thrown at the 53-year-old Englishman. He acknowledged the fans’ frustration, but stressed the importance of supporting the team.

“I understand the narrative towards me. That’s better for the team than it is towards them, but it’s creating an unusual environment to operate in,” he said in the post-match interview.

Southgate pointed to higher expectations and the need to maintain a positive atmosphere. He praised substitutes Kobbie Mainoo and Cole Palmer for their impact, noting the team’s improved play and the creation of good openings. Despite the struggles in front of the goal, Southgate remains optimistic about the team’s progress.

Defender John Stones echoed his manager’s sentiments, highlighting the team’s improvements and two clean sheets. He didn’t shy away from their annoyed supporters but emphasised the team’s focus on converting chances in future matches.
