Grace Mugabe Accused of Improperly Burying Husband
Zimbabwe’s former first lady, Grace Mugabe, has been accused of “improperly” burying her late husband, former President Robert Mugabe.
The deceased statesman – who died aged 95 – was buried in a private ceremony at Kutama, his home village in Mashonaland West Province, in 2019.
Patrick Zhuwao, Mr Mugabe’s nephew, told a South African broadcaster that his uncle was buried according to his own wishes.
However, in a letter recently sent by Chief Zvimba – the traditional chief of Mr Mugabe’s home region – to Mrs Mugabe, he demanded that the former president’s remains be exhumed so that they can be properly reburied at a gravesite next to his late mother, Bona.
Chief Zvimba wrote: “All properties of the late Robert Gabriel Mugabe are supposed to be kept at his homestead and handled in line with our traditions. I want you to rebury the late president in accordance with our traditions … at a place designated by the family and his late mother.”
In addition to paying a fine of five cattle and a goat for the supposed violation, Mrs Mugabe must also appear in the village court next Thursday morning, 20 May, in Murombedzi Growth Point.
