Headaches Pile on For Pep Guardiola And Man City
Manchester City can’t seem to catch a break lately and coach Pep Guardiola is most certainly having sleepless nights as he tries to weather the storm.
The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is wreaking havoc with the English Premier League (EPL) fixtures, especially after several players at camp Etihad tested positive, resulting in match postponements and emergency team selections, which have included youngsters from City’s academy.
The 50-year-old Spaniard has had to make an example of Jack Grealish and Phil Foden by leaving them out of the starting team for the match against Newcastle United on Sunday, 19 December. The pair had flouted COVID-19 guidelines to have a night out on the town before the game.
Guardiola’s frustrations are reaching breaking point as he fields a team of 14 fit players – as per the EPL’s requirements – for the next handful of matches to complete the current 2020/21 season.
During an interview on Tuesday, 21 December, he shared his sentiments: “We think it is absurd to play within 48 hours because it is a much higher risk of injury and the quality of the game will not be as good.”
Time will tell if Guardiola’s preparations will be enough when his side squares off against Leicester City this Sunday, 26 December.
