Kaizer Chiefs Keep Continental Hopes Afloat

Kaizer Chiefs reignited their CAF Confederation Cup journey with a narrow 1-0 win over a challenging ZESCO United at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola, Zambia.

Pule Mmodi reacted swiftly after Flavio Silva’s header struck the woodwork to secure the decisive goal just two minutes into the match on Sunday, 25 January.

The victory was hard-fought, as a bumpy pitch and ZESCO’s physical approach, led by striker Amine Hiver, tested the Amakhosi backline. Despite the pressure, goalkeeper Brandon Petersen and his defenders remained resolute to keep a clean sheet.

This historic result marks the first time a South African Premier Soccer League side has defeated ZESCO on their home turf.

Tactical adjustments by co-coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze paid off, as their offensive lineup exploited a weakened ZESCO defence. While some supporters were critical of the overall fluidity of the match, others were quick to highlight the efficiency of the result.

Reflecting on the team’s progress and the surrounding scepticism, Kaze suggested critics will “eat humble pie” by the end of the season.

With four points now on the board, the Chiefs sit third in Group D, one point behind Zamalek with five, heading into the return leg in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, this Sunday, 1 February.
