Louis van Gaal Opens Up About Cancer Battle
Former Manchester United and current Netherlands coach, Louis van Gaal, has revealed that he is battling an “aggressive” form of prostate cancer.
The 70-year-old manager disclosed the secret he has kept hidden from his players during a live television interview on Sunday, 3 April 2022.
The Dutch tactician has already received 25 treatments since the diagnosis, and to attend some of these, he had to sneak out to the hospital at night during team camps while players were asleep.
Despite his illness, Van Gaal plans to lead his team at the World Cup in Qatar as they are set to play the tournament’s first match in Doha on Monday, 21 November 2022.
Manchester United took to social media to wish the Dutchman a speedy recovery.
The club tweeted: “Everybody at Manchester United is fully behind our former manager, Louis van Gaal, in his battle against cancer. Sending you strength and courage, Louis.”
