Luis Rubiales Detained in Spain

Luis Rubiales, the disgraced former chief of the Spanish Soccer Federation (RFEF), was taken in for questioning amid a corruption investigation on Wednesday, 3 April.

The 46-year-old was detained as he stepped off the aeroplane upon his arrival in Madrid, Spain from the Dominican Republic.

According to reports, Rubiales is under investigation for charges of receiving illegal commissions while he was negotiating to host the Spanish Super Cup competition in Saudi Arabia. Authorities searched his home last month while he was in the Dominican Republic.

One source told an international publication that Rubiales has officially been handed a court summons relating to these corruption charges.

If found guilty, Rubiales – who denies any wrongdoing – could face a two-and-a-half-year jail term. He is one of seven individuals under investigation.

The former RFEF chief executive could also be handed a similar sentence on a different charge: Rubiales is going to trial for sexual assault after he kissed Spain women’s forward, Jenni Hermoso, during the FIFA Women’s World Cup final celebrations last year. Hermoso insists that the kiss was unwanted.

Rubiales has also denied any wrongdoing regarding the Hermoso charges.
